Christingle Church Parade this Sunday

Just a reminder that it's the Christingle Family Service and Church Parade this Sunday (21 Dec). We'll be meeting from 10.00am on Sunday morning, and expect to finish around 11.45am. All Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are expected to attend, in full uniform please. Parents are welcome to stay for the service, which will be the usual mix of traditional carols and burnt sultanas.

Panto Tonight!

Just a reminder that it's the Panto tonight.

Oh yes it is!

You need to be at the Academy/Take2 Theatre in Birdwell for 6.15pm latest. You can drop off any time after 6.00pm. The car park at the theatre is usually fairly chaotic so don't leave it to the last minute.

Please make sure you personally hand over your child to Kim.

If you haven't already paid for your Panto tickets please bring the money with you tonight.

For those not attending the Panto, a reminder that there are no beaver, cub, or scout meetings this week.

Christingle Service – 21 Dec

Scouts will be attending the Christingle family service on Sunday 21 December. Please be at HQ in full uniform for 10.15am latest (HQ will be open from 10am). The service will finish at approx 11.45am

Xmas Sleepover – 27/28 Dec

We’re organising a Sleepover for 27/28 December. Depending on numbers this will either be at HQ or in the Lodge at Silverwood. The cost is £12 each. Scouts will be given details tonight and we're looking for email confirmation by the end of this week if you want to go. Permission to Camp forms will be sent out by email next week.

Australian Damper Bread

Last night the Cubs tried their hand at a spot of baking (well I think that’s what you call it) using an age old recipe for Australian Damper Bread.
In colonial Australia, stockmen developed the technique of making damper out of necessity. Often away from home for weeks, with just a camp fire to cook on and only sacks of flour as provisions, a basic staple bread evolved. It was originally made with flour and water and a good pinch of salt, kneaded, shaped into a round, and baked in the ashes of the campfire or open fireplace.
As you can see the kids enjoyed getting their hands and uniforms dirty.

Beavers and Cubs over Christmas

The panto is on Wednesday 17th December so there will NOT be a Cubs on the 18th.
There will NOT be a Beavers or a Cubs due to Christmas and New Year bank holidays on 24th/25th December and 31 Dec/1st Jan 09. Beavers will be open on 7th January and Cubs on 8th January as normal.

Christingle Services

Tuesday 9th December: The District Christingle for all Sections to be held at Hoyland's St Andrews church. I'll post more details later.

Sunday 21st December: Our own family Christingle service. All the family are welcome to join us for this one. More details later.

Christmas began this week.....

Beavers and Cubs were all busy little elves this week making Christmas decorations and having fun with a new game, Cotton Ball Caper! Even Scouts enjoyed that one. We also welcomed a few new faces into Beavers this week to make up for the ones we lose up to Cubs - I've warned Blackford Sports to stock up on uniforms!

Beaver Bowling

Our Beaver bowling night was a huge success. There were some tremendous scores and I think maybe we ought to run an inter-section competition as Beavers could give Scouts a run for their money! They certainly bet the Leaders who were pulling no punches either! Ardsley Beavers don't take any prisoners! Wonder if we ought to challenge Hoyland?

Thank you all for your speedy responses. We need to arrive at the theatre from 6pm in order to be seated and ready for the performance to start at 6:30. Can you send the £5 in to me no later than 5th December please in a named envelope. There are sweets, drinks, icecreams etc available to buy before it starts and during the interval. I'll leave it to your discretion how much money your child takes. Please wear uniform tops or shirts and neckers. I'll let you know the pick up time as soon as I get to know.

Downe 2009 - Update

Less than 250 days to go to next year's Summer Camp!

So far we have more than 30 kids signed up, which is a record at this stage. We still have a few spare places if anyone else would like to go. You need to be a cub, scout or explorer (i.e. at least 8 years old) by camp, next July. Ask for further details, if you're interested.

Some of you have been asking about camp bank cards. These are now done and they will be going out this week - apologies for the delay. The next payment deadline is the end of December, by which time you should have paid at least £85.

The campsite we're going to, Downe, is one of five national scout centres. There's loads to do onsite, and it's within reach of the south coast. We'll start planning in detail after Christmas, but you can be sure of a fun-packed week. Watch this space for further details.

Scouts - Wide Game

Just a quick reminder that tomorrow night, weather permitting, Scouts will be doing a wide game in the woods. So remember to bring outdoor clothing that you're allowed to get dirty! For one week only: you don't need to come in uniform.

Panto Time!

We are taking Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to see Babes in the Wood at the Academy Theatre in Birdwell on Wednesday 17th December. The cost is £5.

Ardsley Scouts and Cubs in Swim Away Success

Hi All,

Cubs and Scouts competed in the district swimming gala at Wombwell swimming pool on Saturday 8th November 2008.

Overall it was tightly contested between Hoyland and Ardsley for the overall competition, with Hoyland just pipping Ardsley at the end to win.

However Ardsley cubs relay team picked up first place and a trophy to show their acheivement! [photo attached]

Well done to all the swimmers that took part, we need as many people for next year, no matter what your ability, as the event is always great fun and enjoyed by everyone who joins in.

Cubs don't forget I need you to bring back your swimming letters so that Akela and I can get the races sorted before Saturday. Please make every effort to join in with this!
Don't forget the church parade on Sunday either - and bring those letters back too please.

Beavers next week

Just a reminder that next week we have the free swim at Wombwell baths on the 8th, No attendance required from Beavers at the Remembrance day service on the 9th, and then the district campfire on Tues 11th followed by Beavers as normal on the 12th. Then the bowling event on the 19th. Aren't we busy Beavers????

Ardsley Beaver Campfire

We are having our own small campfire tomorrow night (weather permitting) in the carpark. We have hotdogs and hot chocolate and will be having a bit of a singsong. Parents you are very welcome to stay and join in.

Beavers District Campfire

Tuesday 11th November is the Beaver Campfire at Darfield. Meet there at 6pm and collect beavers at 7:30 from Darfield Church Hall (next to the Cross Keys pub). Wear uniform. No money necessary. Bring outdoor clothes as weather permitting we will be outside.

Updated 4/11/2008: Darfield have been in touch....you need to collect Beavers at 7:15 NOT 7:30 now. Also there will be Pudsey bear chocolates and buns on sale with all proceeds going to Children in Need - if you wish to buy some.

On Saturday 8th November, Beavers can use the small pool at Wombwell between 5 and 6 absolutely free! They must have an adult with them. Leaders are not available to be responsible.

Scouts This Week

There will be no Scout Section meeting this Wednesday, due to bonfire night.

Instead we're having a Sleepover this coming weekend. Starting with the District Swimming Gala which kicks off at 5pm at Wombwell Baths. From there we'll be returning to the Scout Hut for a Movie Night & Sleepover. On Sunday morning we'll be attending the Remembrance Sunday Church Parade. So you need to be dropped off at Wombwell Baths at 5pm on the Saturday and picked up from the Scout Hut at 11.45am on the Sunday.

You will need... your swimming stuff, your sleeping bag/mat and washing kit, and full uniform & a poppy for the church parade.

Beavers and Cubs are meeting as normal.

Pumpkin Party - Thanks

We'd just like to say a big thank you to everyone who braved the cold to come to our first ever Pumpkin Party over the weekend. We hope you all had a good time.

Thanks to everyone who contributed buns, fireworks, and pies. And to the adult helpers, without whom it wouldn't have been possible.

Pumpkin Party Update

Our debut Halloween event is only days away!

We don’t want to give away too much of the programme, but here's an idea what to expect:

Please arrive on the Saturday night from 6pm, ready for a 6.30pm start.

The event is completely outdoors, and due to the weather recently, we recommend wearing good outdoor footwear, as it may be wet and muddy. It's also been extremely cold these last few days, so coats (waterproof!), hats, gloves and the like may be desirable. If you can manage all that and fancy dress, there will be a prize for the best costume.

Food will be served around 7.30pm. The menu includes: Pie & Peas, Soup & Roll, plus an assortment of home baking treats. Tea, Coffee and Squash will be on hand to help wash it all down.

After food has been served, parents and guardians will be offered a short break as the Scouts run an activity involving all members the younger sections.

Hopefully, we’ll be capping all this off with a bit of a campfire.

If you would like to bring along some fireworks, we’d be extremely grateful and happy to set them off for you. No sparklers please!

The event will conclude around 9pm.

You should receive your tickets at the section meetings this week, however don’t worry if your child can’t make it – you’ll be given them on the night.

Cubs Update

Swimming Gala Nov 8th - PLEASE make every effort to attend. The more Cubs who swim - the more points we can gain and maybe we can win this year.

Church Parade Nov 9th - again, PLEASE make every effort to attend. It is our most important service of the year as it shows our respect for all the Scouts who have died in war as well as service personnel.

Last week Cubs helped our Pumpkin Party preparations by making ghosts to hang in the trees at Silverwood. I think they'll look quite effective in the dark with torchlight. Our Scouts and Leaders have been working really hard, and still are, to make this event one to remember. More spooky fun this week.......

Beavers Update

Swimming Gala Nov 8th - Beavers will be able to have a free swim during the gala as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Not a Leader I'm afraid. Details to follow

Church Parade Nov 9th - Beavers are NOT required to attend this service due to the solemness of the occasion.

Campfire Nov 11th - Beavers are invited to attend the District Beaver Campfire. Meet at Darfield Church Hall just before 6pm. Parents are welcome to stay or can collect children at 7:30. Full uniform please and a coat as we may hold this outside if the weather permits. No money needed and refreshments will be given. Watch out for the letter and reply slip coming your way this week.

Bowling Nov 19th - you already have details of this. Please let Kim have your meal requests asap.

We invested Hannah, Ciera, William and Joseph into our Group this week after the older Beavers helped Ed and Ethan build a fire in the carpark. Everyone then helped to keep it going by collecting sticks from the churchyard.

Leaders figured this was a more appropriate activity then the one all the media are saying we want to do! Don't believe all you read or hear. Our response to any questions will be as it always would be should one ever be asked (never in my experience) "ask your mam."

Cubs Bowling Night

Sorry for the delay blogging this but last week Cubs had a great night out at the bowling alley as a fitting finale to the Fitness Challenge activities undertaken lately. Speedy almost had Akela beat but just lost out on the last bowl. It was too noisy to hand out badges at the venue so we did that tonight along with investing our 2 newest recruits, Chris and Robert. We also welcomed Joshua, up from Beavers this week.

Beavers Bowling Night

Following on the success of the Cubs event I have booked a session for Beavers. This will be on Weds 19 November at 5:30. As I haven't been able to plan a sleepover due to work commitments I am going to use some of the money put by for Beavers from the Summer Gala to pay for both the game of bowling and a meal and drink. Watch out for the letter coming home this week. I'm still planning to have a sleepover in the new year when the weather gets warmer though.

Cross Country

Any Scouts wanting to go to the Cross Country this Sunday and in need of a lift: if you can get to the Scout Hut for 11.30am we'll get you up to Silverwood. Drop off will be about 3.30pm.

If you're making your own way there, registration is 12 o'clock, estimated finish is 3 o'clock. Silverwood is on the A628 between Dodworth and Silkstone.

Don't forget, if you fancy camping over at Silverwood tomorrow (Saturday) night, Richard is organising a camp. See earlier post here.

The cross country competition is open to Beavers, Cubs and Scouts (separate races), but the camp is only open to Scouts.

Hopefully, one way or the other, we'll see you all up at Silverwood this Sunday. The more turn up the better our chances of winning.

1st November - Pumpkin Party

Over the weekend of 31st October - 2nd November, we're planning some Halloween fun & games at Silverwood Scout Camp, and we hope you'll join us.

On the Saturday evening, 1st November, we're holding a Pumpkin Party. From 6pm there will be some ghostly games and activities for Beavers and Cubs. We'll be putting on some food from about 7.30pm, followed by a campfire. We're aiming to finish around 9pm. This is a family event so you're welcome to bring brothers and sisters, but all children must be accompanied by an adult. We're hoping you'll all make the effort and come in your best spooky outfit. Tickets will be £2.50each or £10 for a family ticket (up to 5 people). Food is included in the ticket price.

Scouts will be camping from Friday night through to Sunday. There will be some Halloween activities on the Friday night just for Scouts, and on the Saturday the Scouts will be helping us set up and run the party. Scouts' Mums and Dads are welcome to join us for the Pumpkin Party on the Saturday night.

Bowling Night Update

We've had a re-think about the transport issues. It will be easier for everyone to meet at Barnsley Bowl at 6:45 and NOT at the Scout Hall. Have a word with Kim if you have a problem as she can arrange a seat or two for anyone without transport.

Important Dates to Note!

As I will be celebrating my 30th wedding anniversary (I know a very young child bride!) next week, there will NOT be a Beavers meeting on 1st October. Cubs will run as normal.

Sunday 5th October - I'll be there to see all your smiling faces at the Harvest Church Parade.

Thursday 9th October - Cubs are bowling at Barnsley Bowl. Hard copy details to be handed out this week. We will meet at 6:30 at H.Q. and go together en masse. We will need parental help with transport please so can you let me know if you will be able to help. We will aim to be back at H.Q. for 8:15. Uniform MUST be worn.

Downe 2009 - Two down, one to go!

We've had an excellent response so far for next year's Summer Camp. All the places on the first two minibuses have now been filled (in record time!), and we've started filling up our third bus. Once these places have gone that's it, so if you want to go, return your booking form as soon as possible.

This week, the Scout troop welcomed several new members, who took their promise and were invested into the worldwide family of Scouts.

Bike Camp Report

Just thought I'd write a quick post to let everyone know how last weekend panned out.


We set off at nine(ish) on Saturday morning, making really good time up until we reached the footpaths near Silkstone. Several stiles, deep mud and a fence or two later we managed to get onto the campsite.

Sadly, due to the extremely laid back manner in which the Scouts set up camp (it was meant to be a relaxing weekend!) we never made it to Penistone show. Not that anyone minded as they were busy whizzing around the woods on their bikes!

The Scouts soon returned as the night drew in and everyone started to get a little hungry...jacket spuds and a bit of a BBQ soon sorted that out. The Scouts then did their usual "Will they, wont they" routine in regards to sleeping in the Bivvy they had built. Amazingly however, a few of them actually stayed the night (well...until 6am!) in the shelter!

In what seemed like no time at all it was time to "leisurely" pack up camp and set off on the long journey home. All the Scouts did really well riding back...it's a shame I couldn't manage the same feat!

Thanks to all the Scouts who came along, if you missed out don't worry as the next adventure is already in the pipeline...watch this space!

Scout Bike Camp - Reminder

Scouts going on the Silverwood Bike Camp this weekend need to meet at HQ tomorrow (Saturday) for 9.00am. You will need your bike (obviously!) and a helmet, and a day sack with your packed lunch and waterproofs. The rest of your camping gear can go in a separate bag which will be going by car.

We've had an excellent initial response for next year's Summer Camp, with just 4 places remaining from the initial allocation of 26 places.

8th November - Swimming Gala

This year's District Swimming Gala takes place on 8th November at Wombwell Baths, from 5pm to 8pm. This is an event where Ardsley normally does very well, and we're in with a good chance of winning if we can get a good turnout. Further details nearer the time.

12th October - Cross Country Competition

On Sunday 12th October it's the Metro Cross Country running competition. Scout Groups from the three Barnsley districts, Fitzwilliam, Central, and Pennine, will be competing in a series of X-country events. There will be competitions for Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts, with individual and team prizes for the winners. The event takes place at Silverwood Scout Camp from 12 noon to approx 4pm. Further details nearer the time.

5th October - Church Parade

Our next Church Parade will be the Harvest Festival Family Service on Sunday 5th October at Christ Church, Ardsley. We will be meeting at 10.10am at HQ, and expect to finish around 11.45am. All sections are expected to attend.

Cycle Camp

After the success of the patrol camp last year, and the Scout Bike Ride earlier in the summer (I know, I know...what summer?) Ed and Myself decided we could probably combine the two.

We'll be leaving at around 0900 on Saturday and riding up to Silverwood. From there, well be leaving our bikes for a while as we go up to the Penistone show and have a gander (forgive the terrible farmyard pun). On our return we'll be having a bit of a BBQ and a bit of a campfire. We'll be returning on Sunday, again by bike.

Scouts should have got a permission to camp form containing more details on Wednesday, but if for any reason you missed it and still wish to attend, please leave a comment below and I'll get in touch with you as soon as possible.

Welcome back!

It was great to see all our members back for the start of the new Scouting year after the disruption of Summer holidays. Leaders have been busy planning Camp 2009 and researching Camp 2010 and also planning the autumn programmes. This week Beavers started work on the Friendship Challenge badge, which involved learning about things to do with France including trying some food. (Unfortunately, Tescos versions of croissants etc don't taste quite the same as the ones you can buy in France eaten standing up with a cafe au lait surrounded by French locals)
Scouts made Quiche Lorraine, which actually looked good enough to eat!

Cubs did some fitness tests in preparation for the Fitness Challenge badge. They all have a diary to keep for 10 days concerning their eating and exercise habits. Akela and I are also planning a trip to the local bowling alley where we will award the badges earned.
So, as you can see, a busy start.

Summer Camp 2009

Our 2009 Summer Camp will be at Downe Scout Activity Centre in Biggin Hill, Kent. We’re planning a packed week of activities onsite and in the surrounding area.

The camp dates are Saturday 25 July to Saturday 1 August 2009. The camp is open to Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers, and as usual numbers are limited. The cost of the camp is £195 per person. To secure a place you need to return the reply slip on the letter with a non-returnable deposit of £30 as soon as possible. The camp is open to Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers, and as usual numbers are limited. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

The balance of the camp fee can be paid in instalments via our Camp Bank. You can make further payments at any time; just bring your payment and your Camp Bank card to any pack/troop meeting. It will help us if you place the Camp Bank card and your payment in a named envelope, separate from any subs, so we can deal with it during the meeting. Any cheques should be made payable to ‘36th Barnsley (Ardsley) Air Scout Group’.

Postcard from Beaudesert (Part Deux)

It's been a few days now since we let you know what's going on, so we thought we'd fill you in on what's happening down here in the beautiful Cannock Chase. First and foremost, the Scout with the superficial wound (see previous post) is healing up nicely.

Wednesday morning saw more good weather as the Scouts geared up to get ready for Go Ape! a high ropes course through the trees of Cannock Wood. Whilst the Scouts tested their vertical limit, the Cubs went off to Shugborough to learn from Mrs Wheelock how to make bread, cheese and butter. We're usually hesitant to taste the Cubs' baking, but they all did really well and helped to feed the group when the BBQ was lit up on Wednesday night. The Scouts made burgers from scratch (no cows were harmed directly mind!) and Cubs cooked all their own food, giving the camp cooking squad a well deserved rest!

After a hard days activities we decided to let everyone have a rest on Thursday. Only joking! Everyone got kitted up and set off on the longest hike of their lives. Funny thing is, our veteran campers say that every year! When the group returned to camp, everyone tucked into their jacket potatoes with a choice of beans, cheese, tuna mayo and camp-made coleslaw. It's amazing what a child's imagination can do when confronted with these choices! Tuna mayo and beans seemed to get good reviews...

After lunch, we managed to cram in another session of high octane activities. While the Cubs played frisbee golf and drove formula 1 pedal karts, the Scouts tackled the notorious Jacob's Ladder and the sheer face of the abseiling quarry. Everyone got back to camp for a rest and dinner, which was well worth waiting for! By the time everyone had eaten and washed up, it was time for bed as we had to be up early for one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the week. Alton Towers!

Everyone got up early this morning, greeted by a delicious bacon sandwich. Once seconds had been called and the pots were washed it was time to jump in the van and get to the theme park before the queues got too large. Everyone was handed a ticket and mounted an attack on the gates, within seconds everyone was looping loops and whiting knuckles while the sun beamed down once again. In what seemed like no time we were huddling together for a group photo before once more getting in the vans to get back to camp for the final night of Summer Camp 2008.

We're hoping to be back between 1pm & 2pm tomorrow, and we'll be passing a message down the grapevine as to what time we'll be back.

Everyone here at Beaudesert

Postcard from Beaudesert

We thought we'd drop you a line just to let you know how things are going down here in the lovely Cannock Chase.

Saturday saw our arrival, and the place hasn't been the same since! The weather held out long enough for everyone to put up their tents and get settled, and in any case a little rain never stops us having a good time!

Everyone worked so hard that they were ready for a good home cooked meal. You might have noticed us carrying the chilli onto the kit van in bio-hazard suits on Saturday morning. Seriously though it went down really well.

The weather on Sunday looked promising as the Cubs and Scouts got kitted up and headed off towards the lake. Cubs were coracling whilst the Scouts built their rafts. Of course, like any Ardsley trip to the lake, everyone came back with a smile on their face and needing a shower! (although most of them needed a shower anyway!)

RAF Cosford was the destination for Monday mornings outing, and gave the Cubs and Scouts the opportunity to complete their Air Activities and Air Researcher badges respectively. The rest of the day passed quickly as the afternoon was packed with activities including climbing, crate stacking and initiative exercises.

The Cubs then came back to camp for a good old sing-a-long while the Scouts prepared for a cosy nights sleep in their Ray Mears style bivvys. Luckily the werewolves stayed clear and they all came back for breakfast this morning. Except our two oldest Scouts, who were certain they heard something outside their bivvy. They were back in their tent before their hot chocolate had even gone cold!

We decided that everyone needed a wash this morning, so we descended on Stoke's fabulous indoor super tropical indoor fun park. It was actually called Waterworld, but it was so fun it deserved a longer name!

Anyway, we've just about reached the point we're at now, and you'll be happy to know that everyone is having a great time and we haven't had any major accidents. Although just now, a Scout has wandered over with a superficial wound.

I suppose I best sort that out!

Cubs 18th July Meeting

Just a reminder that there will not be a Cubs meeting tonight as Leaders are going to empty Tesco shelves in preparation for camp. See you all Saturday morning at 9:30. Remember to bring a packed lunch and a drink. Put any medicines in the medicine box - complete with names and instructions, any spoons needed etc . Think positive weather thoughts between now and Saturday!!

Scout Bike Ride - Report

4 Scouts, accompanied by 3 leaders (not a bad ratio) set off in good weather and high spirits at 09:30 on the Saturday morning of the 28th June 2008 towards Oxspring on the Transpennine trail from Scouts HQ. Making good progress we arrived in Oxspring to find that it is devoid of a suitable cafe (business opportunity here surely). The Scouts discovered a playground which after topping up their energy levels from goods from the local shop made for a good half an hours "rest".


The only reason for riding up the incline to Oxspring is for the enjoyment when you make the return journey in about half the time and six times the speed. With no injuries, punctures or mechanical failures, we all enjoyed some light lunch before arriving back at the Scout hut for 14:30 (the hill up from Stairfoot Roundabout seemed a lot steeper after lunch!) A fun way to spend a few hours and a couple of the Scouts asked when we would we be doing another one, so there will be another one before British summer time ends (has it started?)

Scout Bike Ride

Scouts taking part in tomorrow's Bike Ride need to meet at HQ for 9.30am. The ride will be approx 20miles. Remember you must bring your helmet or you can't go.

Summer Camp 2008

Thanks to everyone who attended the Summer Camp meeting on Tuesday night. A couple of quick reminders:

1) If you haven't paid the full balance of £175 for camp, we need it this week. I think most of you are up-to-date, and I'd just like to say thanks for keeping the money coming in this year with minimal prompting from us.

2) Could we have your Permission to Camp form, Medicines form, and any pocket money you want us to look after a.s.a.p. and no later than 11 July, so we've got time to sort it all out before we go. We will not accept pocket money after this date.

Scout Cyclist Badge

Tonight at Scouts we'll be doing bike maintenance and a cycling proficiency test in the car park. Followed by the cycle ride this Saturday. Scouts who successfully complete both elements - i.e. tonight's activities plus the bike ride - will have earned their Cyclist Badge.

So remember to bring your bike and your helmet tonight. You can leave your bike at HQ until Saturday if you wish.

Summer Camp Meeting Tonight

A reminder that there's a camp meeting tonight for parents at 7pm. We'll be talking you through the arrangements and the kit list and answering any questions you may have. We recommend all parents attend, especially if this is your son/daughter's first camp. It should only take about an hour.

If you haven't paid in full for camp yet can we remind you that the balance of the camp fee is due by the end of next week.

Weekend Camp Report

Friday evening was perfect camping weather. Dry, warm, sunny with a light breeze. Tents were pitched easily and everyone was happy and excited. Cubs and Scouts played in the woods, settled into tents and gathered wood for the fire that we got going straight away. Cream of chicken and cream of tomato soup with chunks of crusty French bread for supper followed by wide games in the woods with torches. Then sitting round the fire for a while before bed. Apparently, ghost stories were told by torchlight in the tents but Leaders weren't privy to these for obvious reasons - shame!

Saturday started lovely and sunny but by mid morning the rain started and then rarely stopped. It didn't spoil anyone's enjoyment though. It was a novelty being allowed to play out in the rain and we carried on the planned activities despite it. All the district campers got together for an opening ceremony festooned with costumes, flags and mascots. We were Italy and had a huge flag and our huge rabbit, Luigi who was kitted out with an Italy football jacket. We also had a pennant each. The other Groups were America, Jamaica and England. We split into teams and made our way round the different countries to engage in activities ranging from physical challenges to craftwork. Italy, (that's us) did Pizza darts, a huge Spider's web challenge, hockey and bungee running. After lunch we continued on from the morning but then regrouped in our own site. Our children played in the woods and spent hour upon hour finding long sticks to hold in the fire. Beavers had a great time with us and didn't want to go home. James made us laugh when he got covered in mud and said he was a Mud Warrior and that his socks used to be white! Tea today was Spag Bol, made from scratch with fresh ingredients. One of the Cubs couldn't understand how Shere Khan could have made it without a microwave! This was followed by buns homebaked by our Wombwell Scouting friend Denise, who helped us out over the weekend. Then Beavers and Cubs had a small campfire singsong with hot chocolate afterwards before parents started arriving to take them home.

Sunday was a lovely day albeit a bit breezy - a godsend though as it dried the tents out. Six thirty (a.m.) saw some Leaders enjoying a cup of tea whilst chatting to a benchful of Cubs also enjoying the first cup of tea of the day. Danny said he loved playing in the rain and hopes it rains every day next camp! We had a Scouts Own service in the camp chapel where our District Commissioner said Thankyou to the kids for being them. he said that if we believed all we heard in the media we would think that all kids were out to harm us, take drugs etc. Scouting reminds us that there are some great kids out there and as Leaders we recognise that we are lucky to be working with them. Some of the campers joined in a Scavenger Hunt but others stoked up the fire and just chilled with each other. Nothing organised, nothing timed or planned. Just chillaxing with their mates and putting an odd stick on the fire here and there. After a picnic lunch we all joined in a wide game in the woods before a closing ceremony.

Thanks to all the parents who helped on Friday evening with the tents and unloading - very much appreciated. A special thanks must go to John who helped out over the weekend. He does an awful lot of work in the background that enables Leaders to be with the children and never stops from very early in the morning to making the hot chocolate before bed. Thanks John. Also, thanks a lot guys to Ian, Akela, Shere Khan, Ed, Sara, Chil and Lauren for all their hard work too. We make a great team with John (and Steve next camp).

Finally, I'd just like to say that we have some lovely children in our Group. Kind, funny, helpful, well mannered and a real delight. Many people tell me that I must be mad giving up so much time for Scouting but they don't know what they are missing. Can't wait for 19th July! See you at the parents meeting tomorrow.

District Camp Information

We've been asked to post the kit list for this weekend's camp, so here goes:

Campers will require: a sleeping bag; carrymat or bivvy bag; towel; personal washing gear; tea-towel; activity wear (i.e., clothes/footwear that can get wet/dirty); at least one complete change of clothes; jumper or fleece for evenings; cagoule; plate, dish & mug (preferably unbreakable); knife, fork & spoon; torch; and a rucksack or holdall to put it all in.

The weather forecast for the weekend is a bit iffy. Please make sure to bring waterproofs, and some waterproof footwear.

A tip for parents of new campers. By all means help your child pack, but don't do it for them. They need to see things going into the bag, so they know where to look for them. It's a good idea to put clothes in a plastic bag inside the rucksack or holdall for extra protection. And include a couple of spare plastic bags for wet/dirty clothes.

No Cubs Tonight

Summer Fayre Update

I would like to say, on behalf of my fellow Leaders a very big thank you to everyone who sent in donations. We had some smashing items. Also, a big thank you to all our bakers - the buns and cakes looked lovely and were a big success, we didn't have any left. Also, we must say thank you to Richard, Rebecca and Sammy, Jackie, Jill, Nathan, Daniel, Katie and Katie's gran for all their help with the stalls. This whole Group effort made a grand profit of £354.89 and we still have a few items to have a small raffle with on the Summer camp meeting night and a Radley designer handbag to sell on ebay, so hopefully the total will rise somewhat. We also had a very generous donation of £60 from one of our church friends. I am going to split the money between all 3 sections this year. Cubs and Scouts will have some extra summer camp activities with their money and Beavers will have a sleepover camp in September with theirs. So, on behalf of all our children THANKYOU.

Summer Fayre

On Tuesday 24th June at 7pm we will be holding our camp meeting for parents. We will give you all the information you need and you can ask us any questions.

BEAVERS DUCK POND WALK

Just a reminder that Beavers are to meet at Mitchells pond car park weds 11th June at 5:30 with a few slices of bread. After feeding the ducks, geese, swans etc we'll be walking back to HQ for a 7 to 7:15 pickup.

District Camp - Badge Reminder

Just a quick reminder. If you are going on the District Camp, and you haven't already, you need to text Kim by close of play today, so we know to order a badge for you. Kim's mobile number is on the slip you were given (unfortunately can't publish it here, as this web page is publicly available.)

District Camp - Details

For those who didn't attend this week, Ardsley will be taking part in this year’s Fitzwilliam District Camp, which will take place at Silverwood Scout Camp from Friday 20 – Sunday 22 June. The theme of the camp will be The Olympics and we will be attending as Italy – ‘cos they have the best food.

The camp is open to all Cubs and Scouts. (Beavers can attend as day visitors on the Saturday – they will be receiving a separate letter about this.)

The cost of the camp is £20, which will cover food, activities and a camp badge. Additional spending money is not required.

To reduce costs we will not be providing transport to and from camp, rather it will be up to parents to arrange drop off and pick up at Silverwood, which is on the A628 between Dodworth and Silkstone.

Drop off will be between 7 – 8pm on the Friday night. Pick up will be at 4pm on the Sunday.

Campers will require: a sleeping bag; carrymat or bivvy bag; towel; personal washing gear; tea-towel; activity wear (i.e., clothes/footwear that can get wet/dirty); at least one complete change of clothes; jumper or fleece for evenings; cagoule; plate, dish & mug (preferably unbreakable); knife, fork & spoon; torch; and a rucksack or holdall to put it all in. Closing date is 5th June. £5 deposit to secure your place.

District Camp

This week we'll be releasing further details of the forthcoming Fitzwilliam District Camp, which takes place at Silverwood from 20 - 22 June. The theme of the camp is The Olympics, and it promises to be a great weekend with lots of activities.

The camp is open to Cubs and Scouts. Beavers can join in the fun too, as day visitors on Saturday 21 June.

Watch out for letters this week.

How to cremate a fish

Last night the Scouts did a survival exercise, in which they had to prepare a fish, and cook it over an open fire. Had it been a real-life survival situation they would probably have starved to death while arguing about who was going to gut the fish! Here are a few photos:

We are attending the District Camp this year at Silverwood Scout site on the weekend of 20th June. That is, Friday evening to Sunday teatime. It will be open to Cubs and Scouts and will probably cost somewhere in the region of £20. Watch out for the application forms coming your way.

St Georges Day

Our district St Georges day event will be held on Sunday 20th April. Please meet at Darfield h.q. (next to the church and Cross Keys pub) for 1:45. I'll have a better idea of a pickup time after Tuesday so ask me Weds or Thursday. Please ensure full, smart uniform is worn and black shoes. I am proud that Ardsley is usually the best turned out Group. There will be a collection in church should you wish to contribute. Please feel welcome to join us on the day.

SUMMER FAYRE

The fayre will be held on Sat 14th June at 1pm. We will be relying on any donations you might be able to pass our way. Watch out for a letter coming home with details of suitable items.

Equipment request

As we want to do more cooking and baking with all sections could we ask if anyone has any equipment they can donate to us. Things such as bun trays, cooling racks, weighing scales, rolling pins, cookie cutters, stainless steel pans, spoons of all sizes, vegetable knives, mixing bowls, and anything else I've forgotten to add that you use for cooking and baking. Also, we are always short of dishcloths, scourers, tea towels, hand towels, cleaning products such as bathroom cleaner, Dettol spray to clean tables, washing up liquid,hand soap, and the like. As someone keeps saying..."every little helps!"

CUBS

From this week, Cubs can arrive from 6.25pm and come straight into the Main Hall. Parents must still bring them in and wait until a Leader says it's ok to leave. That's just to make sure that Leaders are ready to supervise at 6:30 and are not distracted elsewhere.

Easter Activities

Beavers made Easter nests last week so Cubs wanted a go. So, this week Cubs split into Sixes and made buns with chocolate and eggs to decorate. They followed a recipe and weighed out their own ingredients etc. They did really well and needed little supervision so Akela and I promised we'd plan more cooking and baking in future. Chill paid us a surprise visit as well! He's been busy working but hopes to be able to come along more often, work permitting.
Next week Beavers will be having a Treasure Hunt in the churchyard next Wednesday, so don't forget a coat as we'll do it in the rain if we have to.
We will be holding our meetings throughout the Easter break.

Beavers on the move.....

Due to my work commitments, Beavers will meet on Wednesdays 5.30 to 6.45 pm as from Wednesday 19th March. I am sorry if this causes any inconvenience.

So, Wednesdays Beavers 5.30 to 6.45pm followed by Scouts at 7pm. Cubs as normal Thursdays 6.30 to 8.15.

Church Parade and camp news

Mothers Day Church Parade will be on....wait for it......Mothers Day! That's 2 March. Please be at hq for 10:10 in full,smart uniform with collection money optional. It should finish around 11:40 and is a family friendly service so please feel free to join us.

Camp: There are only 2 Scouts and 3 Cubs not going this year which is fantastic. Almost a full turn out. 2 of the 5 are on holiday or still in school but would have gone otherwise. If you haven't already done so, we need you to have paid at least £75 by now. If you want a kit list early then just ask me but otherwise we will give them out when we have our camp meeting.

Beaver and Cub Activities

Beavers have been making a totem pole, Native American headresses and Chinese lanterns of late. This is all to do with their 2008 Challenge Badge where we are looking at other countries. If anyone has anything interesting from another country to show us please let me know. Ideally, I could do with finding someone from another country to come along and talk to us. Anyone any ideas?
Cubs have been decoding ciphers and having a go at a practise piece of tie-dye. If they come out ok then I will be asking them to bring along a white cotton t-shirt to tie-dye and decorate.

Beavers and Cubs Activity

This week Beavers completed the Creative badge by making instruments out of various containers and stationery items, bells etc. We made drums, shakers, banjos,coconut clackers and jingle sticks. We had a lot of fun (and made a lot of noise) playing along to "Old Macdonald had a band" and "I am the Music Man." Next week we will be doing the Air Activities badge.

This year we can wear a special challenge badge for the whole year to compliment some of our activities. Our programme incorporates special activities that I will tell you about as we do them. For example, in a couple of weeks we will be looking to North American Indians for our themed night. This links to America. Can anyone guess what all our activities are themed around? OK, we'll be having a Chinese night, an Indian night, a Canadian night...... any ideas yet? The badge can be purchased from me for £1. Unfortunately, subs don't cover the cost of this one so I can't just give it out.

Cubs this week, finished the Communicators badge by completing an obstacle course blindfolded. They had to listen to instructions shouted by their team. Not easy.

Can I ask if any parents/carers/family members or friends have an interesting job they could give us a talk about. Or do you know anyone with a skill to teach or a collection to show? Can you get us a discount on entry to a venue perhaps?

Pantomime details

Be at The Operatic Centre, George Street,Wombwell to be seated no later than 2:15. Park in the swimming pool carpark and it's below the crossroads opposite the carpark. It's expected to finish approx 5pm.
Refreshments: when you get there decide what you want so you can tell me and pay me so that they can box our order up for me to dish out at the interval. You can get thngs yourself at the interval if you like but they prefer to do it this way. Or take your own.

Our seats are F1 TO F7 G1 TO G5 H1 TO H7 J1 TO J7 K1 TO K7 AND L1 TO L5 sit where you like in those.

I'll be there at 2pm to greet you. Oh yes I will!
